SHOPPING IN NIGERIA: Nigeria, about 30% larger than Texas, is the most populous country in Africa with over 139,000,000 inhabitants. Nigeria is located on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa, bordering Benin, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad. The capital is Abuja and the largest city is Lagos where shopping in Nigeria is centered. As is expected in developing nations, shopping in Nigeria is an interesting blend of old and traditional, juxtaposed with the decidedly modern. New shopping centers, such as the Lagos City Mall and the Palm Shopping Mall, boast a variety of up-to-date retailers, making shopping in Nigeria more convenient. In addition to smaller outlets specializing in local and ethnic wares such as carved wooden items, those shopping in Nigeria will also find a growing number of more familiar establishments with a “western” flair for style and merchandising. Nigeria has experienced stability issues and the government does keep the exchange rate under control, so those shopping in Nigeria will generally not see very low prices. Good hotels and restaurants are plentiful, particularly in and around the larger metro areas, so the traveler shopping in Nigeria will find the country more than accommodating. There are many open air markets, where goods and edible goodies of all sorts can be found, with the typical haggling and bargaining routines expected and enjoyed by visitors shopping in Nigeria and the merchants, as well!
